Bang Bang

Jessie J

featuring Ariana Grande, Iggy Azalea

July 29th, 2014

Jessie J might have let you hold her hand in school, but Ari is gonna show you how to graduate (presumably by studying hard--she got her start on Nickelodeon, after all). Meanwhile, Nicki Minaj tells you exactly what she'll be doing to you, and only spends about four lines even acknowledging that Ariana and Jessie are in the same room as her.

Did you know?

  • Commercially, the song debuted at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Jessie's J highest peaking song on the Billboard charts. It also reached the top 10 in Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
  • Jessie has sad that "it was like a real females-come-together, empowering, supportive [vibe], and then Nicki jumping on it was like the icing on the cake."
  • The song debuted on the US Billboard Hot 100 at number 6, making it the second highest new entry of 2014 on that chart, also following Grande's "Problem." The song is Jessie J's second, Grande's third and Minaj's tenth top 10 single in the United States.
  • Jessi J was born Jessica Ellen Cornish on March 27, 1988 in London, England.
  • Jessi has stated she was "never really that good at anything." She said, "At school they were like 'oh, you're a Cornish girl' and they kind of expected me to be the same as my sisters. Give me something to draw or an outfit to pick for someone, or hair, make-up, acting, write a song, I'm fine with it, but anything to do with sums – it was never my thing."
  • Jessi J was diagnosed with Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, and suffered a stroke at 18 as a result.
  • In early 2011, Jessie J suffered a panic attack on stage after she was forced to perform in the dark.
  • Onika Tanya Maraj (Nicki Minaj) was born in Saint James, Trinidad and Tobago on December 8, 1982 and raised in Jamaica, Queens, New York.
  • Minaj became the first female solo artist to have seven singles simultaneously chart on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.
  • At the age of 19, Minaj worked as a waitress at a Red Lobster in the Bronx.
  • Minaj lists the following artists as influences on her musical style: Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, Lil Wayne, Smokey Robinson, Lauryn Hill, Jadakiss, Natasha Bedingfield, Remy Ma, Lil' Kim and Missy Elliott. She has also been inspired by Janet Jackson, Madonna, Britney Spears, Marilyn Monroe, Grace Jones, M.I.A. and Cyndi Lauper.
  • Ariana Grande-Butera (known professionally as Ariana Grande) was born June 26, 1993 and raised in Boca Raton, Florida.
  • Grande is of Italian descent: "half Sicilian and half Abruzzese."
  • In 2008, Grande played the role of Charlotte in the musical 13 on Broadway, for which she won a National Youth Theatre Association Award.
  • Grande possesses a four octave light lyric soprano vocal range.  She has been deemed the "mini Mariah Carey" and the "new Mariah Carey" by critics due to her wide vocal range.
